Moctezuma
Moctezuma deliberately evokes the alien and exotic, the pulse of tropical rainforests, space age alphabets, aerial maps of floodplains, thunderclouds shifting over mountains. Patterns and logographs vanish beneath or emerge from flat explosions of colour. Tensions are created by clear solid shapes that look like, but don’t function as, symbols or letters (as they don’t relate to recognisable referents), and by shapes that hint at but never fully describe potential forms. Through unconventional deployment of colour I wanted to suggest that errors may have occurred in the printing process, as though certain inks had run out mid-print.
